Anniversary Trip to North Yorkshire - Day 1

At the end of June it was our 20th wedding anniversary! I know, it's crackers - I'm not sure who let us get married so young! I blame the parents. Ah well, we did it and we wanted to celebrate twenty years of course. So we booked a holiday. You probably won't remember but ten years ago when it was our tenth wedding anniversary we went away with my mum and stepdad, Lee's dad and stepmum, and his mam and stepdad came for the weekend. We went to France so I was considering booking a holidya abroad again, but then after my mum's mastectomy back in January she has been struggling. The wound hasn't healed properly and she's having to keep going back to the hospital. This is obviously worrying and draining for her, and we have all been worried about her too. So she didn't want to go far from home, so at the end of March we booked to go to the North Yorkshire moors.

It's not a place that Lee and I have been very much, so we thought it would be nice. He booked a nice big cottage in a place called Glaisdale which was barely a village, although it did have a shop and a pub. His parents all decided they would come for Saturday night and Sunday night, which was fine, and my mum and stepdad decided they would come for five nights. We booked it Friday to Friday so Lee and I got everything packed up and left about 10am probably.

He is having problems with his knee so I drove to begin with, to Malton. I haven't been there in decades so I thought it would be nice to go. It's known as having amazing food, so I had high hopes for lunch. We got there, parked, and wandered round for a bit. It was really hot (right in that heatwave a month ago) and there aren't many shops. There's tons of food places, but not many shops? So that's weird.

We considered a couple of places to eat but then went into a place on the market square. They had plenty of vegetarian choices and I actually went for vegetarian steak in a roll with chips. It was really nice. I can't remember what Lee had but he liked it too. We went in a few more shops and then set off to Glaisdale.

We got a bit lost and ended up having to go to Pickering for petrol, and then we drove up hill and down dale to get there. Lee had to get me to drive the last bit because his knee was hurting too much. The cottage was on the steepest hill ever but we finally got there and got in. We wandered around scoping it all out. Downstairs there was a big dining kitchen, a conservatory, a big living room, a downstairs loo, and a bedroom that was internal and had windows on to the corridor which was a bit odd. Upstairs there was two bedrooms, one with a king sized bed which we snaffled, and two bathrooms, one with a bath and one with a shower.

We were a bit confused because it slept eight but then in the kitchen there was a little door and a cute loft bedroom above the kitchen, with an ensuite bathroom. We thought that was ideal for my mum and Norman because they would be close to their bathroom and safe up there. It was ideal! They arrived not long after us so we helped them unpack the car and showed them round and they were happy to have that room.

We had all brought buffet stuff for tea so we had that later. My mum and I shared some champagne and we played games in the conservatory. Lee and I walked down the sloping garden too, it was nice to stand in the grass. Norman and I had some Baileys in chocolate cups later which was nice!

Lee and I in the bistro we ate in for lunch

Vegetarian "steak" sandwich and onion rings

I love ghost signs on the sides of buildings and really liked this one in Malton

I didn't know there was a Shambles in Malton. It had cute shops on it!

This wasn't quite ghost writing but it was old writing

Looking from the terrace of the house down the garden

The house itself - we had the bedroom on the very left there, and in this photo you can't see the extension where my mum and stepdad slept

The chocolate fudge cake I got from Costco because Lee wanted it, it was fine by me

This cute little stained glass window was in the garden when we walked down it

Ah here's a photo of the whole house, from the garden

And the garden as we walked down it

And the cutest alcohol ever later
