The Ballad of Johnny and June in Leeds

For my birthday my friend Jodie gave me a Theatre Tokens voucher and I ended up spending it on a ticket to The Ballad of Johnny and June in Leeds. It took me so long to decide what to buy and I trawled through all the local theatre websites but eventually decided on a matinee performance of this. I didn't have hugely high hopes for it as it's a jukebox musical, but I thought it would be a funny thing to see and I liked the idea of a solo date to see it. So I booked it for a Wednesday afternoon.

I set off and parked in Chinatown and walked up towards Zaap where I do really like the food. But I just wasn't feeling it. So I walked up Merrion Street looking in all the restaurants there, and I was nearly swayed by Japaenese food but again wasn't feeling it so I kept going. I crossed over by the theatre and saw a sign for Indian street food. I LOVE Indian street food so I made my way up the stairs into a really cutely decorated restaurant. There was only one table occupied so I easily got seated.

I had sev puri which were crunchy, delicious, and spicy! Then I had butter paneer with rice, and a mango lassi. The lassi wasn't amazing, but the curry was rich and delicious. I'm glad I found the place. I've looked on the map and it was called Indian Pakwaan and I would utterly recommend it if you're up that end of Leeds! I also really liked the decoration which I took photos of on the way out.

I headed to the theatre and got in really early so I just sat reading for a while before the play started. The premise is is that it's John Carter Cash telling you the story of his parents meeting, of their lives together, and so on. It uses Johnny Cash and June Carter songs to do that. It is really well done and the cast were all brilliant - it didn't sound like there was a note out of place. The girl playing June was brilliant, especially on No Swollering Place which is a brilliant song anyway. The guy playing Johnny wasn't as good, but he did look the part. I enjoyed myself, it was a good solo date and a good way to use the voucher I had been given!
