Films of the Month - August

I'm so far behing with blogging! Moving has really taken it out of me! We have been so busy unpacking and sorting things out and the house is looking really lovely and nearly everything has a place, but it means I'm way behind on blogging here and on my book blog. I'll get caught up eventually, but as I write this we're going away on holiday in less than a week, which will obviously mean more blog posts and more books to review! Maybe by Christmas...? 

I only watched six films in August, because of all the moving and everything. I've also started watching Emmerdale again - because Robert Sugden is back - and this has taken up more time than I thought. And I'm behind on that, too! Anyway, here's what I saw:

I heard a load of buzz about K Pop Demon hunters so I thought I would see what the fuss was about, and I ended up really liking it. It's really cute, I would recommend it 

I'm still making my way through Heath Ledger's films, for a zine and to complete something, so I watched Brokeback Mountain. I've seen it before but not in forever, so I really enjoyed it. It's just such an emotional film

I really like the film Identity and have since Lee and I saw it at the cinema way back in 2003 when it came out, but I hadn't seen it in ages and wanted to, so I watched it by myself

Bend It Like Beckham turned up on Netflix so I watched it. I loved it way back when but I'm not sure it's really stood up to the test of time

Lee and I watched Ocean's 13 the day after we moved house, in our new living room, while Lee unpacked all his records which he was happy about. I don't like this as much as the first two but it's okay

Finally Lee and I watched Oliver and Company which I've never seen. We've bee watching some of the older Disney films. I liked this but it's not great

Films of the Month - July

Again a rubbish month for films! I only managed seven in thirty-one days! But here's what I did see:

I've been meaning to watch I'm Not There since it came out in literally 2007. I can remember reading all about Cate Blanchett, mostly, playing Bob Dylan, and I was intrigued, but I just hadn't got round to it. But I'm making my way through all of Heath Ledger's films and this is obviously one of them, so I finally got round to it and I liked it a lot

Lee and I watched Reservoir Dogs together. I have seen it before but not for ages. I always like it, it's a classic for a reason

A WEEK later Lee and I watched Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, it was a Friday so we watched it over tea. I love it, it's always funny

I've never seen The Damned Utd but I was reminded of it while reading about something - can't remember what now - so watched it. Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall were good, and I generally liked it

I also read somewhere about this biopic of Morrissey and I'm not sure how it had passed me by before. I like The Smiths but obviously don't like Morrissey's racist beliefs, but I was interested to see this anyway. I liked it, it's a good story. I could have used more Johnny Marr though

Next in my run of Heath Ledger films I watched Candy, which I've never seen before and hadn't even heard of. I liked it, but it was hard to watch at times. It's about heroin addicts so like what do you expect. I probably wouldn't watch it again though

And finally Lee and I watched Back to the Future again because I felt like it was a while since we had seen it!

Films of the Month - June

I only watched seven films in June which was just a stupidly low amount! I think I was just busy though so didn't have much time to sit down and watch films! So here's what I did see:

Lee and I watched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as we hadn't seen it before. We both love the first one and we liked this, I think it was a good sequel

I blogged previously that Sam and I went to Penistone cinema to see The Salt Path and Cabaret, in the same day. I had read the book (reviewed here) so I was keen to see the film. And I liked it! But I did know the story so as I said I got more out of it than Sam did. A lot of the dialogue is really quiet which is annoying, but it really does look pretty.

And THEN all the stuff about the story not being true came out. I - along with Sam and my book club - have been agog at every new revelation. I am finding it interesting on an objective level about what 'truth' is and how everyone has their own version of it. I totally believe that Moth has some kind of degenerative illness, but it seems like it's really atypical or unknown. But no one should have to disclose private medical history, so I am sad that happened. I believe too that Raynor Winn has the right to be known by whatever name she wants to be known by. Where I fall down is over the financial stuff. It is fascinating and I don't think the story is over yet... 

 

Anyway, Sam and I saw Cabaret in the evening of the 7th, which was delightful as always

Jac and I watched Groundhog Day together virtually, which was nice. I haven't seen it in absolutely years so it was cool to see again

I watched Trainspotting again for the first time in forever. I need to watch the sequel soon too

I am trying to make my way through all of Heath Ledger's films and am going to write a zine about each film, so I went with this. I liked it, Heath is delightful in it, very scuzzy which is how I like him

Finally Lee and I watched Bill & Ted Face the Music while we were away on holiday in North Yorkshire

Films of the Month - May

I watched eleven films in May which wasn't a lot actually. I didn't watch any until the 8th of May, for one reason or another, and then I had a ten day gap mid month. I guess I was just busy! But here's what I did see:

I've never seen Starter for Ten even though I love James McAvoy, so when I saw it on iPlayer I watched it. It's cute, I liked it

The BBC also recommended this to me so I gave it a go. Patrick Kielty was better than I thought. It's the kind of slow, melancholic film that I sometimes really like

Lee and I watched The Wedding Singer while we were away in Withernsea. I absolutely love it and always have, so it was nice to see it again as I haven't for ages

We also watched Toy Story because it's a classic but didn't require either of us to really pay much attention to it

Jac and I watched the Rocky Horror Picture Show virtually together just after I had seen it live, because I hadn't seen it in forever and wanted to

And then the day after I watched The Perks of Being A Wallflower because of the Rocky Horror part of it. It's a pretty good film, I quite like it. I loved the book but it's a really long time since I read it

Lee and I watched Monsters Inc one Friday evening as we both love it

I don't remember ever seeing the Godfather Part III in total before. There were loads of things that happened in the film that I utterly don't remember, so I'm really not sure if I have or not. It's fine. Not amazing, but fine

I managed to find the Road Diary of Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, and it was glorious. It was such a brilliant look into the band and into Bruce's history and into his shows and the fandom. It was brilliant. Plus it had footage from Sunderland 2024 when it was absolutely throwing it down just before he came on stage. I was there!

I watched Almost Famous because I just love it so much

Finally I watched Judy, the biography of Judy Garland. I have seen it before but didn't remember a lot of it. It's fine, I'm not sure Renee was brilliant for the role but she was okay

Films of the Month - April

I watched twelve films in April which wasn't that many, but it was sort of a bitty month and I just didn't have chance to. Here's what I did see, though. 

I watched How The West Was Won because it was on iPlayer and I just quite fancied such an epic. It was really good, I liked it

Netflix recommended What Jennifer Did so I watched it. It is an interesting true crime documentary and I would recommend it if you like the genre

I had of course heard of Don't Worry Darling because of Harry Styles, but I hadn't ever seen it, so I finally did. I really liked it, Florence Pugh was great and I liked the story

Lee and I watched Monsters University together which we haven't seen as often as Monsters Inc but still both really like

Sam and Jac and I watched Anastasia virtually one evening. I've never seen it before but of course know the story, so it was interesting to see. I probably wouldn't bother again but I am glad I've seen it

I saw Six the Musical in the cinema with Sam and Jodie and it was really fun to see

I watched A Knight's Tale because I wanted to see something with Heath Ledger and I haven't seen it before. I really liked it, it was fun and funny

Another Netflix documentary about an adopted man and his birth mum. It's really good, I recommend

Netflix recommended Meet the Khumalos so I took a chance and ended up really liking, it's a fun comic film

I can remember Ayrton Senna dying but I didn't know much about him, so it was interesting to watch this film about him on Channel 4. It was good, and I'm not much of a Formula One fan

I watched Flashdance which I have never seen, can you believe? I love films about dancing so I'm not really sure how this one had bypassed me for so long, but it had. It was good

Finally, I watched The Beach on iPlayer. I read the book way back in 1999 and can remember the film being made. I've seen it before but not for ages. I really liked it this time around, it is good. I don't like the ways it differs from the book, though!

Films of the Month - March

I only saw ten films in March which wasn't many, but I was quite busy and just didn't sit down that often to watch a film. But here's what I did see:

I was still making my way through the Oscar nominations that I wanted to see, so I saw A Complete Unknown. I did like it and thought Timothee was great as Dylan, and he sounded good too

Lee and I watched Men in Black 3 which we've seen the least of the first three I think. I sort of don't like how it resets the first one, but I still love all these films so it's fine

I watched Conclave, which I really loved, it was exactly my kind of thing. All that Pope stuff is just so bizarre and I loved how it was depicted

Then I watched Anora, which I also really liked. I've probably still got some Oscar stuff to watch, but I'm glad I watched these three most of all

Lee and I watched The Silence of the Lambs which I haven't seen in forever and which I really like even though I find it quite scary

Sam and Jac and I watched Scream online together, I love it and it was fun to watch together but separately

Lee and I started The Godfather Part II but only watched about half so we will have to go back and watch the rest of it soon. I remember not really liking it much when I've seen it before, but I liked it better this time around

Oh I lied, I watched A Real Pain which was another Oscar one. I liked Jesse Eisenberg a lot and mostly liked the story but felt it was maybe a bit too understated, and I thought Kieran Culkin was maybe a bit miscast. Still worth seeing, though

I watched Bridget Jones's Baby because I want to see the new one so I have been making my way through the first ones. I think this is the weakest, but I can't really say why 

I was listening to a podcast about Wakefield and rugby league, amongst other things, and it mentioned this film, This Sporting Life, set in Wakefield, about a rugby league player. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. He was proper nasty to the woman he is trying to woo! But it did have some great shots of Wakefield including the building that my dad used to work in, so that was nice to see
